A Christmas Destination Worth the Drive

It’s not one thing that makes Christmas Tree Place worth travelling to. It’s everything together.

There may well be somewhere closer to you selling Christmas trees.

We know that.

But every Christmas, families travel considerable distances to Christmas Tree Place at Berkhamsted — and many return year after year.

Why?

There isn’t really one answer.

It’s the fresh trees we’ve spent 35 years learning to grow. The enormous choice. The farm. The atmosphere. The easy access. The huge free car park. The efficient service. The Christmas shop. The tractors. The animated characters. The things for children to discover.

Any one of those things can be copied. Put them all together and you have Christmas Tree Place.

Start with the trees

We’ve been growing and selling Christmas trees since 1991.

Today our Berkhamsted farm includes a 38-acre Christmas tree plantation, and at Christmas our retail area fills with thousands of freshly harvested trees in a huge range of sizes, shapes, grades and prices.

We harvest exceptionally late and continue cutting throughout the selling season. For many of the trees sold here, the journey from plantation to retail area is measured in metres, not miles.

Our team harvests the trees and displays them for you to properly see, compare and choose.

The whole thing works

We’re immediately off the A41 Berkhamsted/Chesham junction, around seven minutes from M25 Junction 20.

There’s free floodlit parking for more than 100 cars, a large retail area, tree netting, and a 49m² Christmas shop and till area selling decorations, lights and Christmas extras.

It may not sound terribly exciting to say we’re good at parking cars, moving trees and keeping queues moving.

On a busy December weekend, it matters.

And it feels like Christmas

You’re still visiting a working Christmas tree farm.

There are growing trees around you, vintage tractors, Christmas lights, animated characters, our viewing platform and lots of other things we’ve added over the years because we think the annual trip to choose the tree should be fun.

Some are substantial. Some are small. Some are slightly eccentric.

We don’t charge an entrance fee and we don’t pretend to be a theme park.

It’s all simply part of coming to Christmas Tree Place.

The Secret Trail

And then there’s our newest addition.

It starts with a wardrobe.

Push through and you’ll find a short Secret Trail winding through a small area of growing Christmas trees.

Beyond that, we’re not telling you much.

We’ve put a lot of thought into it. It’s completely free. There’s no booking.

Just find the wardrobe.

35 years in the making

John sold our first 100 Christmas trees in December 1989. By 1991, brothers Robert and John were growing trees themselves.

We’ve been planting, shaping, harvesting and selling them ever since.

Over those years Christmas Tree Place has grown too. We’ve added the parking, shop, lights, tractors, Christmas characters, viewing platform and all sorts of other things.

More recently, we’ve added the Secret Trail.

Not because we’re trying to become a visitor attraction.

We just want to make the whole experience of coming to buy your Christmas tree really good.

Worth the drive?

We think so.

Not because of one enormous attraction or one clever gimmick.

Because when you put together the trees, choice, freshness, farm, accessibility, efficiency, atmosphere and all the extras, there aren’t many places quite like Christmas Tree Place.

And there’s one thing we’ve always found particularly difficult to show on a website:

It’s hard to convey the sheer scale of our operation.
